Crafted from paper mache, this red daruma doll is in a dynamic red and is a unique way to bring a bit of luck and encouragement to friends and loved ones.

Daruma dolls are popular in Japan and are said to be modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism in Japan. Daruma dolls are seen as a lucky talisman and a symbolism of perseverance in Japan. Their round shape are said to be a symbol for picking oneself up after facing an obstacle. Many daruma dolls are roly-poly toys in Japan that come back upright after being knocked down.

Daruma dolls also typically have both eyes left unpainted. Upon setting a goal, one paints in one eye of the red daruma doll. When that goal has been accomplished, the second eye can then be painted in. It is believed that upon giving the daruma doll his full sight, one's wish will be granted.

This red daruma doll is in a bold red-a color associated with success, and has the inscriptions welcoming luck on its belly, and "welcoming wealth and luck" in gold on the side. Made in Japan.
