In legend, the 6th century Indian Buddhist Monk, Bodhidharma, known as Daruma, found enlightenment upon meditation but in the process, his limbs shriveled up and his eyelids were cut off. Hence, he is famously represented by a paper mache doll.
Red daruma dolls are usually sold without pupils, which the owner will first draw a pupil in one eye when they first have a gold or dream they wish to achieve, then will fill in the other eye once they are able to achieve it. It is known that once the red daruma doll is given it's sight, it will also help grant the owner's wish. Made in Japan.
