This classic Jubako is beautiful and rich in Japanese symbolism and tradition. Our gorgeous, medium-sized plastic lacquer Japanese bento box has a shiny black finish and three stacked tiers with ready-to-fill compartments. Traditional artwork on the lid features a pair of cranes in flight. They soar over the treetops, racing towards the bright red sun. This iconic image carries special symbolism of the New Year and stands for the blessings of good fortune and a long life in Japanese culture.

In Japan, it is traditional to fill these stacked boxes with certain meaningful and artfully arranged foods for Japanese New Year's Day. However, these boxes are also used for storing keepsakes, or packing bento box style lunches.

But a Jubako is much more than just a pretty lunchbox or work of art. This 3 tier Japanese box continues a centuries-old tradition in Japan. According to the Japanese new year tradition, celebrants fill each tier's compartment with Osechi-ryori, food that is symbolic of different virtues and blessings. This classic lacquer Japanese bento box makes a thoughtful gift, especially when you tuck a few unexpected accessories into the compartments.

Each box is crafted in Japan and paper boxed.
