Wakasa nuri hashi, also known as wakasa lacquered chopsticks are traditional hand crafted
chopsticks that originated in the Fukui prefecture of Japan during the Edo period. The process for making the wakasa Japanese lacquered chopsticks is labor intensive. Layer after layer of lacquer is applied, sometimes a pair of chopsticks can feature up to fifty layers. Designs of chopsticks is then either carved or polished.
The beautiful swirling effect is a the result of carving the Japanese lacquered chopsticks. In a classic black that beautifully complements the maroon and yellow swirls, this pair of chopsticks makes a charming gift.
This Japanese lacquered chopsticks also have four pieces of shell inlays on the front and back of chopsticks that change color as it reflects light. Shards of pearl and shell also decorate the inside of the swirled lacquered designs.
