Detailed Description
The more modern style of the kokeshi doll is called creative or shingata. This style of kokeshi design was developed after WWII and perhaps was a reflection of the strong western influence that was imported after the war. The shingata style is still hand painted and made of wood, but the artist is given freedom to use any color and varying shapes and design. Although they are still recognizable as kokeshi dolls, they offer more variety than the traditional shape of limbless body and rounded head. They are well loved and offer a modern twist to the traditional art form.

Kokeshi dolls have a history in Japanese folk art that spans centuries, and the artisans of present continue to learn their craft under the masters. They are typically made of cured cherry, dogwood or maple and the wood is usually chosen for its base color. Although traditional kokeshi dolls designs are representative of different prefectures in Japan, the creative kokeshi dolls are typically not limited to specific regions. Most creative kokeshi artists are found in cities all over Japan.

This particular kokeshi doll is noteworthy in that it is accompanied by a signed artists plaque that includes their personal stamp. For collectors, this designation adds to the value of the piece. The bold, yet feminine color choice of deep purple for the kimono is the perfect canvas for the hand painted wildflowers blooming throughout the print.
