Chinese New Year is one of the most important holidays on the Chinese calendar. This year, February 7 marks the day when festivities begin and the Year of the Rat is ushered in. In accordance with tradition, homes will be thoroughly cleaned and decorated with items representing happiness, prosperity and good fortune. The color red, dragon motifs and other good luck symbols will be displayed throughout homes, while worn and old items will be replaced to comply with the Chinese belief of “sweep out the old, bring in the new”.
Those born in the Year of the Rat (1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008) are noted for their charm, passion and charisma. Highly ambitious and hardworking, they tend to be leaders, pioneers and conquerors, while it is their intellect that brings them success. Famous rats include Gene Kelly, George Bush, Prince Charles, Al Gore, Marlon Brando and Doris Day. Rats are most compatible with the Dragon, Monkey and Ox.
